For laptop owners

How much can you earn from laptop advertising?

the short answer

It depends almost entirely on how often your laptop is open in busy public places. Lidquid pays per verified scan at a rate the brand sets. A laptop that's out five days a week and gets three new scans a day at $0.50 makes roughly $32 a month. A laptop that never leaves home makes close to nothing.

  • Formula: days out × scans per day × rate × 4.33
  • Illustrative rates: $0.25 to $2.00 per verified scan

How are laptop advertising earnings calculated?

You earn a fixed rate for every verified scan of your sticker, so your monthly total is just scans multiplied by rate. To estimate it, use the same formula as the earnings estimator on our homepage:

monthly earnings ≈ days out in public per week × verified scans per day × rate per scan × 4.33

The 4.33 is the average number of weeks in a month. The rate per scan is set by the brand and shown to you before you accept a campaign, so you always know what a scan is worth before the sticker goes on. The other two inputs, days out and scans per day, are mostly down to where and how you work.

Honest note: Lidquid is in pilot and hasn't published real earnings yet. Every figure on this page is an illustration built from the formula above, not a promise or a result. Real numbers will be shared once the first city has run.

What do realistic earnings look like?

Here are four illustrative laptop owners. They range from a couple of dollars a month to well over a hundred, and the difference is almost all time spent in public.

WhoDays out / weekScans / dayRate≈ per month
Mostly at home: one café trip a week11$0.50$2
Part-time café worker: two days a week in a café23$0.50$13
Café regular: works from cafés every weekday53$0.50$32
Campus heavy: library, lectures and the union all week58$1.00$173

The rate matters too. Take the café regular (5 days, 3 scans a day) and change only the brand's rate:

Rate per verified scan≈ per month
$0.25$16
$0.50$32
$1.00$65
$2.00$130

These are illustrations, not averages. Some people will get fewer scans than this and some will get more. The point is to show which levers move the number.

What gets a laptop sticker more scans?

Scans come from people who can see your lid, have time to notice it and are curious enough to pull out a phone. Four things drive that.

Location

Busy places with lots of different people beat quiet ones. A packed campus café, a coworking space, a library or an airport gate puts your lid in front of far more new faces than a quiet neighborhood coffee shop where the same five regulars sit every day. Only first-time scans count, so new eyes matter more than many eyes.

Dwell time

Someone walking past for two seconds rarely scans anything. Someone sitting at the next table for an hour, or standing in a queue facing your screen, has time to read the sticker, wonder about it and scan. Long sessions in one spot are worth more than lots of short ones.

Eye level and angle

A lid facing a room is a billboard. A lid facing a wall isn't. If you can, sit so the back of your screen faces the room, a walkway or a queue. Raised laptop stands help too, because they lift the sticker closer to eye level for people who are standing.

Sticker design and the brand

Curiosity is the whole mechanism. A sticker with a clear, intriguing line like "scan this, I get paid" tends to work better than a bare logo. Brands that people actually want to know about also get more scans. That's one reason you get to approve the brand: pick ones you think the people around you will find interesting.

How can you earn more without changing your routine?

The simplest wins are about where you already go and which way you face. Small, free adjustments can make a real difference:

  • Pick the busiest café you'd happily work from rather than the quietest one.
  • Choose seats where your lid faces the room or the queue, not the wall.
  • Spread your time across a few different spots so more new people see the sticker.
  • Accept campaigns with a higher rate per scan when the brand fits your crowd.
  • Keep the sticker clean and flat. A scuffed or peeling QR is harder to scan.

What doesn't help is asking friends to scan over and over. Repeat scans from the same device, and scans from your own phone, aren't counted. See what is a verified scan for exactly what's filtered out.

Is laptop advertising worth it?

If your laptop is regularly open in busy public places, yes. It's money for something you're already doing, with no upfront cost and no extra work. If your laptop mostly stays home, the earnings will be small and it probably isn't worth much to you.

It helps to think of it as a top-up rather than a job. The appeal is that the effort is close to zero. You don't post, don't sell anything and don't need an audience. Compare that with side hustles that pay more but take hours each week, which we cover in side hustles for students and making money while working from cafés.

Do you have to pay tax on laptop advertising income?

In most countries, yes. Money from laptop advertising is usually treated as self-employment or miscellaneous income, and you're responsible for reporting it. Rules and thresholds vary by country and state, so this isn't tax advice. A few habits will make tax time easy, though:

  • Keep a record of every payout you receive and when.
  • Save any statements or earnings summaries you're sent.
  • Check your local rules on reporting thresholds for small side income.
  • If you already have freelance income, add this to the same records.

If you're unsure how it applies to you, a local tax professional or your tax authority's guidance on side income is the right place to check.

When will real earnings numbers be available?

Once the first pilot city has run. Lidquid is launching with 50 laptops, one city at a time, and we'd rather publish real numbers than guess. Cities open in order of waitlist demand, so joining with your city both reserves a spot and pushes your city up the list.

Questions people ask

How much does Lidquid pay per scan?
Each brand sets its own rate per verified scan, and you see it before you accept. The homepage estimator uses illustrative rates from $0.25 to $2.00 per scan.
Do repeat scans count?
No. Only a real person scanning your sticker for the first time on their phone counts. Repeat scans from the same device, your own scans and bot traffic are filtered out.
Can I earn money if my laptop stays at home?
Very little. Earnings come from people around you scanning the sticker, so a laptop that rarely leaves home will earn close to nothing.
Is laptop advertising income taxable?
In most countries it's treated as self-employment or miscellaneous income and should be reported. Rules vary, so check your local guidance or a tax professional. This isn't tax advice.
Are there any costs that come out of my earnings?
No. Lidquid is free for laptop owners. There are no sign-up fees, sticker fees or minimum terms.
Have real Lidquid earnings been published?
Not yet. Lidquid is in pilot, and real figures will be published once the first city has run. Until then, all numbers are illustrative estimates.
